Pump em up!

It is estimated that in America, 4 million gallons of gas is wasted everyday because of underinflated tires.

Do the world a favor and check the air pressure on your tires.

Besides helping the environment you'll also save money on gasoline.

My hummingbirds have returned! 8-)

Well after a week or more of non-blogging, I am back and happy to report that the hummingbirds have returned to my backyard habitat. I just spotted one at my window feeder.

They are such an uplifting source of light and spirit, especially during this stretch of crappy weather here on the east coast.

If you don't have hummingbird feeders, please do get one or two.

For the nectar mix one part sugar dissolved into 4 parts boiling water. Stir and then let cool. Fill the feeders and enjoy the show.

One more thing. Buy a hummingbird feeder that is red in colour and DON"T buy the commercial nectar that has red dye in it. Apparently from what I have read, it can make the bird sick.

Good luck and let me know if you have any of these creatures around your home.

You want plastics with that?

I have just read a blog concerning the evils of plastic...

"The Wall Street Journal says the United States consumes 100 billion plastic bags annually, requiring about 12 million barrels of oil to produce. And plastic bags, which look like food to marine animals, cause more than 100,000 marine animal deaths per year.

Plastic bags are not biodegradable, but rather, photodegradable. They break down in sunlight into smaller toxic bits, contaminating soil and waterways. This affects us very directly. A shocking statistic says all adult Americans now urinate plastics."

From me.... Try using canvas bags for quick trips to the supermarket. There are many things I don't like about US President Bush, BUT.... as much as he seems to love oil and it's virtues... we support his vision when we consume plastic with impunity. In case you don't know, plastic comes from petroleum products. Regardless of whether you are peeling a new CD or throwing out the kitty litter in Sobeys bags.. the plastic comes from oil....

George "W" may love oil but so do we whether you know it or not.... Take some time to think about it. Really, please do... think about it!

Make everyday Earth Day

Today is Earth Day. This morning I arose, weeded my garden, fed the birds, raked the yard, picked up garbage that blew onto my lot and this afternoon I went for a bike ride.

We only have one earth to live on. Be a good steward and take care of it. Our lives and the lives of future generations depend on it.

Make everyday Earth Day!

World Water Day

Today (March 22) is World Water Day.

We all take for granted that clean and abundant water will pour out of our taps when we turn the handle. For billions in this world, that concept is a far off dream.

There over 2 billion people in this world without access to clean water and adequate sanitation. Water is critical for sustainable development, including environmental integrity and the alleviation of poverty and hunger, and is indispensable for human health and well-being.

In Ontario there is a 13 year old boy who is trying and succeeding in making a difference. His name is Ryan Hreljac. Since 1998 he has raised over a million dollars to build wells in developing countries.

Check out his website and feel free to donate money to his cause. It's a very worthwhile endeavour.
